The Tasing of Alica Cook

Matthew escalated a situation over some expired tags into a full on assault of Alica by taser and pulling her violently out of the car in front of her children while she was waiting to pick up her daughter. The vehicle was owned by a friend who was going through some serious medical issues. Matthew Furman is a disgrace and should never work in law enforcement.

Concerning Matthew's Assault and Willful Neglect of Duty Charges

In a Press Release on February 1, 2019 in the afternoon it was communicated that Matthew had been charged with Assault and Battery, a 93 day misdemeanor, and Willful Neglect of Duty, a misdemeanor with a one year penalty. There were some terms such as required attendance of Anger Management classes.

The incident was described as such,

On February 1, 2019 at approximately 9:44 p.m., Defendant Melvindale Police Sergeant Matthew Furman, along with another Melvindale police officer, were dispatched to a residence ... in Melvindale, to respond to a call of a drunk and disorderly person. Upon arrival, Furman found the intoxicated victim. It is alleged that Furman while attempting to escort the victim down stairs into the basement to recover, had contact with the victim causing him to fall. It is further alleged that Furman willfully neglected his duty while handling the intoxicated victim. EMS was called and the victim was transported to a local hospital.
